At Hollywood Academy of Music and Arts we generally recommend starting mandolin lessons at age 8 or above. The mandolin is an instrument in the lute family and is plucked using a pick. It has four pairs of double metal strings (8 strings total), which makes fretting the mandolin somewhat similar to playing a 12 string guitar, except the chord shapes and tuning of a mandolin and guitar are completely different. The mandolin is a featured instrument used in folk, blue grass, Celtic and even rock music. The most common tuning of the mandolin by far – is the same as a violin tuning. Many violinists double on the mandolin because of this fact.
